We are at a time in our country’s history, when it no longer matters whether you are Republican, Democrat or Independent, liberal or conservative, but rather what we want as Americans. It is no longer about a representative bringing home the “pork” and boasting about it. We are now in a struggle to maintain our very constitution and prevent the expansion of our government that will ultimately limit our freedoms.

I am a member of the “sleeping giant” that recently awakened and realized how far our country has strayed from its constitution. I always thought that no matter how crooked elected government officials could be that they still would follow the US Constitution and protect the rights and liberties of the American people. Well, I was wrong.

Although I did not vote for President Obama, I was very proud on Inaugural Day that we have our first African American president. Since he was so popular I decided to give him a fair chance; maybe I was wrong not to vote for him. However in one of his first speeches, President Obama stated “the government is the answer”. I was shocked to hear these words come out of anyone’s mouth. That sent a fearful chill throughout my body. I always believed that the people of our great nation have the answer. In the words of Ronald Reagan, “Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.”

I could not believe in the early months how our elected officials in congress voted on the largest budget and spending stimulus in US history. The budget contained over 9000 earmarks and the stimulus bill was one that was too large for any one person to read! As we found out in the months to come, this money was spent on such things as, i.e., to save a mouse in one particular area of California, a tunnel for turtles in Florida. Our elected officials chose to spend money like it was going out of style (well, it did, they have to print more) and indebting our children and grandchildren. And of course they do not mind wanting to pass bills that will increase our taxes and place additional strains on the individual tax payer, families, and small businesses.

But for our representatives in congress, this spending was not enough. They bailed out the car industry and their favorite banking institutions putting the government in a unique and strategic position to control them! The Cap and Trade bill was passed in the House of Representatives and is only waiting the vote by the Senate. This bill will increase our taxes and give the government greater control over our utilities and manufacturing. Then there is the nationalized healthcare bill that is currently being debated. I oppose a nationalized healthcare program. The government does not care about our health but rather have another means to control the people.

I attended the tax day Tea Party in St Louis on April 15, 2009.  I stood quietly by the stage. I did not carry a sign nor wear a flag or button but I was proud to be standing next to the people in the crowd. Although I did not know anyone there, I did not feel that others in the crowd were strangers but rather other Americans deeply concerned about the direction of this country under the current administration.

To add insult to injury, the White House released a report on tax day to serve two purposes: (1) Insulting our veterans that they may be domestic terrorists, hoping to discourage people from attending the tea parties; and to ultimately, (2) stomp on my first Amendment Right to do so.  I remember at the end of the day thinking “since when does the White House insult its veterans and try to prevent free speech?

I believe the federal government needs to get their tentacles out of the car industry, banking institutions, utilities, healthcare, and parenting/family issues. If they control these institutions, then the government controls us and we no longer will have our freedoms.

If elected, I will introduce bills to return us to our constitution. The framers of our constitution strategically believed in limiting the powers of the federal government to prevent corruption and prevent those who would want to change our Republic into a socialist government.  I will work to lower taxes including tax reform in either a flat tax or a fair tax system; and also work to disentangle the federal government from the car industry and banking institutions and let the free market system prevail. I believe in a strong military and the need to secure our borders. To prevent corruption, my belief is there should be term limits. The only way this will be passed is if we can vote the cronies out of office.

I have been a nurse for over 30 years and I have had the privilege to work with people from all walks of life – from royalty to the very poor, all religions and cultures. As a nurse I always viewed myself as a servant of others, not unlike the view of my role as your elected representative. My job is to serve the people. I am not an eloquent speaker with shiny words of hope and change because those words can be deceiving. I believe the people want an honest hard worker who will follow the constitution.

Make history and take a stand by electing me as your representative to congress. Thank you and God Bless.
